Description
Additional Information

Copper(I) Oxide Nanoparticles

Copper(I) oxide, with the chemical formula Cu₂O, is a monovalent copper oxide that appears as a bright red powdery solid. It is almost insoluble in water and disproportionates into divalent copper and elemental copper in acidic solutions. In moist air, it gradually oxidizes to black copper(II) oxide. It has a density of6.0 g/mL, a melting point of1235°C, a boiling point of1800°C, a refractive index of2.705, and a flash point of1800°C.

Solubility: Insoluble in water and alcohol; soluble in hydrochloric acid, ammonium chloride, and ammonia water; slightly soluble in nitric acid. Dissolves in hydrochloric acid to form white copper(I) chloride crystalline powder. Reacts with dilute sulfuric acid and dilute nitric acid to form copper salts. Turns blue rapidly in air. Soluble in concentrated alkali, ferric chloride, and other solutions.

Cu₂O is ap-type semiconductor with a bandgap of2.1 eV, exhibiting unique optical, electrical, and photoelectrochemical properties. It also possesses strong adsorption capabilities, low-temperature paramagnetism, and other characteristics. As a photocatalyst, its greatest advantage is its ability to absorb visible light from sunlight, generating photogenerated electron-hole pairs that effectively catalyze the degradation of industrial dye wastewater and nitrogen-containing pesticides. This largely compensates for the shortcomings of semiconductors with larger bandgaps, such asTiO₂, which struggle to catalyze degradation within the visible light wavelength range. It shows great potential in the field of photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. The feasibility of using nanomaterials for photocatalytic degradation of organic compounds in wastewater has been widely confirmed.

Applications of Copper(I) Oxide Nanoparticles

1、Used in the paint industry as antifouling bottom paint for ships to prevent marine organisms from adhering to the hull;

2、Used in the glass and ceramic industries as a red glass and red glaze colorant;

3Adding copper(I) oxide nanoparticles to fibers imparts antibacterial and antifungal properties, making garments produced from these fibers antibacterial and antifungal;

4Used as a conductive agent added to the waterproof hydrogen electrode in alkaline hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells to reduce resistance polarization, significantly outperforming graphite;

5Used in agriculture as a fungicide and highly effective insecticide;

6Due to its semiconductor properties, it is used in the electronics industry along with copper to make ballasts;

7Also used as a coating, surface modification material for plastics and glass, and as a catalyst in the organic industry;

8、Used as a flame retardant and smoke suppressant forPVC(polyvinyl chloride);

9、Used in the fabrication of detectors.
